Booking the SAAQ knowledge test, step by step

Updated

The SAAQ knowledge test is taken at a service centre, by appointment. You book online, in your SAAQclic account, or by phone with the SAAQ — never without an appointment.

Booking, step by step

  1. Sign in to SAAQclic — or call. Knowledge test appointments are made online, in your SAAQclic account, at saaqclic.saaq.gouv.qc.ca — the online services of the SAAQ. If the online service doesn’t suit you, the SAAQ also takes appointments by phone, at 1-800-361-7620 (press 2 to make or change an appointment, then 2 again for a knowledge or road test).
  2. Pick the service centre and the time slot. The test is taken on a computer, at an SAAQ service centre. Choose the centre that suits you and a slot that leaves you time to be ready — not the first free date.
  3. Get what you bring on the day ready. The ID the SAAQ requires, as listed in your appointment confirmation — its official page names a learner’s licence or a piece of photo identification — and payment for the test: $13.50 per attempt, retakes included, accepted on site in cash or by debit card, cheque or money order. Check the current fee when you book.
  4. Arrive early. The SAAQ recommends arriving early — enough time to check in at the counter before your scheduled time, without rushing.
  5. Choose your language. The test is taken in French or in English, your choice. The SAAQ may also offer the test in Arabic, Spanish or Mandarin, on request.

Changing or cancelling the appointment

It all happens in SAAQclic: that’s where you check, change or cancel your knowledge test appointment. If you can’t make it, the SAAQ asks you to cancel as soon as possible. A change of plans is no drama — what matters is not showing up to a test you aren’t ready for.

When to book

The right date isn’t the nearest one: it’s the one where every section clears the threshold with room to spare. The test is passed in the format 28 questions · 3 sections · 75% each, with no overall average — the passing score applies section by section. Before making the appointment, measure yourself against a mock test under real conditions, and book when the verdict is clear in all three sections. Every attempt costs the same: better to go in ready.

After the test

The result reads section by section: each one is passed or failed on its own. A section below the threshold means a mandatory wait of 28 days before you can sit again — but only the failed sections have to be redone, and the sections you passed stay passed. The retake is booked exactly like the first attempt, in SAAQclic, at the same fee; the retake page explains how to prepare it differently.

Permis 101 computes your readiness score the way the test grades: per section. You see your real margin in each one — and the app tells you when it’s the right moment to open SAAQclic.
